Remote Terminal Units (RTUs)
Field-mounted microprocessor controllers that acquire analog and digital signals from wellsite instruments and relay them to the SCADA host, often with local logic for autonomous operation during communication loss. Typically ruggedized for outdoor, hazardous-area service at unmanned sites.
Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Flow Computers
Industrial controllers that execute control logic, sequence equipment, and perform custody-transfer flow calculations at the wellsite or facility. Flow computers compute corrected gas and liquid volumes per AGA and API standards and feed the data into the SCADA layer.
SCADA Host Software and HMI
The central supervisory application providing operator graphics, alarm management, trending, and control of remote assets, including the human-machine interface (HMI) screens. Includes historian functions that archive time-series data for production and pipeline analysis.
Cloud and Hosted SCADA Platforms
Subscription-based SCADA delivered from a remote data center, allowing operators to view and control field assets through a web browser or mobile app without on-premise servers. Common for small and mid-size producers seeking lower infrastructure overhead.
Edge Gateways and IoT Devices
Compact field devices that aggregate sensor data locally, perform protocol conversion, and forward it to cloud or enterprise systems over cellular or satellite links. Support edge logic, store-and-forward buffering, and Industrial IoT connectivity for wellsite automation.
Telemetry and Communications Hardware
The radios, cellular modems, satellite terminals, and antennas that carry SCADA traffic between field RTUs and the host over long distances. Selection depends on site coverage, latency, and the polling versus report-by-exception scheme used.
Field Sensors and Instrumentation
Transmitters and sensors for pressure, temperature, flow, tank level, and cathodic protection potential that provide the measured inputs to RTUs and PLCs. They convert process conditions into signals the SCADA system records and acts upon.
Data Loggers and AMR Devices
Standalone recording units that capture and store field measurements at set intervals, including automatic meter reading (AMR) for remote retrieval of metered volumes. Used where continuous telemetry is unnecessary or where local backup of records is required.
