Drilling Jars

Jars that meter hydraulic fluid through an internal restriction to create a timed delay before firing, allowing the driller to build up overpull or set-down load before the tool trips. The delay is controlled by fluid metering rather than a fixed mechanical setting.

Jars that fire at a preset trip load determined by a mechanical detent or latch mechanism rather than fluid metering. They release instantly when the applied load reaches the factory- or field-set threshold, giving repeatable, predictable triggering.

Jars that combine a hydraulic time delay with a mechanical trip mechanism to provide both a controlled delay and a defined release load. The hybrid action gives the operator latitude in setting impact intensity while retaining a positive mechanical trip.

Jars capable of delivering impact in both the up (overpull) and down (set-down) directions from a single tool. Bi-directional operation lets the crew jar in whichever direction is most effective for the sticking mechanism without tripping a different tool.

Jars run as part of a fishing string to free a fish (lost or stuck downhole equipment) and recover it from the wellbore. They are typically run with a fishing assembly such as an overshot or spear and an accelerator to maximize impact at the stuck point.

Compact jars designed for deployment on coiled tubing rather than jointed pipe, used to free stuck CT bottomhole assemblies and downhole tools. Their reduced length and operating mechanism suit the limited weight and reach available in coiled-tubing interventions.

Companion tools run in the string near the jar to store and release energy that amplifies the jar's delivered impact. The accelerator (intensifier) isolates string drag and compresses an energy-storage element so more of the applied load reaches the stuck point.
