Rotating Control Devices (RCD)
Sealing devices that close the annulus around the drill string and divert returns to the MPD flow line, enabling a pressurized closed-loop system while rotating and tripping. Sold as bearing assemblies with replaceable elastomer or active stripper seal elements rated to a defined static and dynamic pressure.
MPD Choke Manifolds
Dedicated, often automated choke manifolds that regulate surface backpressure to hold a target bottomhole or annular pressure. They include multiple electric or hydraulic chokes, flow meters, and Coriolis or mass-flow sensors for closed-loop pressure control independent of the rig's primary well control choke manifold.
Electric and Hydraulic Chokes
Precision actuated chokes that throttle returning fluid to set surface backpressure. Electric chokes provide fast, repeatable positioning for automated MPD response, while hydraulic chokes are used where speed and force requirements or area classification favor hydraulic actuation.
Backpressure / Auxiliary Pumps
Continuous-circulation and backpressure pumps that maintain flow across the choke when the rig pumps are off, such as during connections, so the annular pressure profile and ECD-equivalent bottomhole pressure remain constant throughout the drilling cycle.
Coriolis Flow and Pressure Measurement Skids
Sensor packages that measure mass flow in versus flow out, density, and pressure in real time to detect kicks and losses earlier than pit-volume methods. These data feed the hydraulic model and the automated control system for closed-loop pressure management.
MPD Control Systems and Hydraulic Modeling Software
Real-time control and modeling platforms that compute the required surface backpressure from a calibrated wellbore hydraulics model and command the chokes and pumps. Automated systems integrate flow, pressure, and rig data to manage ECD and execute automated well control responses.
Underbalanced Drilling (UBD) Equipment
Surface packages for drilling at a bottomhole pressure intentionally below the formation pressure, including separators, flare/igniter systems, and pressurized handling of produced gas and liquids. Used to minimize formation damage and increase rate of penetration in suitable reservoirs.
Air, Gas, and Foam Drilling Systems
Compressed-air, nitrogen, and foam injection packages used for low-density, lightweight drilling fluids in hard, low-pressure, or lost-circulation zones. Equipment includes compressors, boosters, foam generators, and mist pumps tied into the closed-loop return system.
