Torque Monitoring Systems

Computerized systems that simultaneously record applied torque and accumulated turns and plot them as a torque-turn curve, comparing it against the connection's reference graph to validate make-up. They are the standard method for evaluating premium and proprietary connections.

Simpler systems that record peak or final make-up torque against a target value and tolerance band, used primarily on API buttress, round-thread, and other connections where turn-based shoulder detection is not required.

In-line sensor subs and tong-mounted load cells that convert mechanical reaction force on the power tong into a calibrated torque signal feeding the monitoring computer. Some subs also measure axial tension or compression on the connection.

Battery-powered sensor subs that transmit torque and turn data over wireless or Wi-Fi links to the operator console, eliminating data cables across the rotating tong and rig floor and enabling remote real-time witnessing.

Proximity, encoder, or potentiometer sensors that count tong rotation and detect the make-up reference point, supplying the turn axis of the torque-turn record and triggering shoulder and dump-valve logic.

Control packages that interface the monitoring computer with the power tong's hydraulic dump valve, automatically releasing torque when target make-up is reached to prevent over-torque and connection damage.

Acquisition and analysis software that generates per-connection torque charts, applies pass/fail evaluation rules, logs results, and exports tally reports for the casing or tubing string record.
