ION Geophysical Corporation is a Houston-based geoscience technology company founded in 1968 as Input/Output, Inc. The company provides seismic data acquisition, processing, and imaging solutions to the global oil and gas exploration industry. ION operates through two primary segments: E&P Technology & Services and E&P Operations Optimization. Its flagship offerings include the BasinSPAN multi-client seismic data library covering major petroleum basins worldwide, advanced seismic imaging and processing services through its GX Technology (GXT) division, and a suite of command-and-control software for marine and ocean-bottom seismic operations. ION filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April 2022 and emerged in September 2022 after selling its software business (Orca, Gator, Marlin, MESA) to CGG's Sercel division. Post-restructuring, the company continues to operate its data library and geoscience consulting services from its Houston headquarters.
