Static (Reverse-Flow) Gas Separators
Passive separators with no moving parts that reverse the fluid flow path at the intake so that buoyant free gas continues upward into the annulus while liquid is drawn downward into the pump. Suited to low-to-moderate gas volumes where rotary separation is unnecessary.
Rotary Gas Separators
Active separators using a rotating inducer and chamber driven by the ESP shaft to impart centrifugal force, throwing denser liquid to the outer wall and concentrating gas at the center for venting. Handle higher free-gas fractions than static designs.
Vortex Gas Separators
A rotary variant that generates a stabilized vortex using a paddle or guide vanes rather than a tight-clearance rotating chamber, improving abrasion tolerance in sandy or solids-laden wells while still separating gas centrifugally.
Tandem Gas Separators
Two separator stages run in series on the same string to increase gas-handling capacity for wells with very high gas-to-liquid ratios where a single separator cannot adequately strip free gas.
Gas Handlers (Charge Pumps)
Devices that do not separate gas but homogenize the gas-liquid mixture and boost intake pressure to keep gas in a finely dispersed state, allowing the main pump to move higher gas fractions without gas locking. Often paired with or substituted for a separator.
Crossover and Discharge Heads
The porting components that direct the separated liquid stream into the pump intake and route the vented gas into the casing annulus, completing the separator's flow split at the discharge end.
Abrasion-Resistant Separators
Separators built with hardened or tungsten-carbide internal bearings, sleeves, and flow surfaces to extend run life in wells producing sand or other abrasive solids alongside gas.
