6-Pulse VSDs
Drives using a basic six-diode (or six-thyristor) front-end rectifier. They are the lowest-cost line-side topology but draw the highest input current harmonics, often requiring external filtering or line reactors to meet IEEE 519 limits.
12-Pulse VSDs
Drives whose rectifier is fed through a phase-shifting transformer to create two six-pulse bridges 30 degrees apart, cancelling lower-order line harmonics. They are a common choice where utility harmonic limits cannot be met by a 6-pulse drive.
24-Pulse VSDs
Drives using a four-bridge phase-shifted rectifier arrangement to cancel additional harmonic orders, used on large ESP installations or weak grids where the strictest input-current distortion limits apply.
Active Front End (AFE) VSDs
Drives that replace the diode rectifier with a controlled IGBT front end, producing near-sinusoidal input current, regulated DC bus voltage, and the ability to return braking energy to the line. Used where the lowest line harmonics or regeneration are required.
Sine Wave (Output) Filters
LC filter assemblies installed on the drive output to attenuate inverter switching harmonics, delivering a near-sinusoidal voltage to the step-up transformer and downhole motor. They reduce dielectric stress, cable losses, and motor heating on long ESP power cables.
Step-Up / Output Transformers
Surface transformers that raise the drive output voltage to the level required by the downhole ESP motor after accounting for cable voltage drop. They are matched to motor voltage taps and are frequently paired with output filters.
Drive Switchboards and Enclosures
Outdoor-rated cabinets housing the drive, controls, and protection. They are specified by environmental enclosure rating (NEMA 3R/4 or IP54 and above) for installation in unconditioned wellsite environments.
ESP Drive Controllers and Monitoring
The control and instrumentation layer that sets speed and torque references, executes soft start and gas-slug ride-through logic, and integrates downhole gauge and motor data for protection and SCADA reporting.
