Electric (AC) Top Drives
Top drives powered by variable-frequency AC induction or permanent-magnet motors, offering precise speed and torque control and high reliability; the dominant configuration on modern offshore rigs.
Hydraulic Top Drives
Compact units driven by hydraulic power packs, valued where electrical infrastructure is limited or for smaller workover and platform rigs; generally lower torque than large AC drives.
Top Drive Gearboxes
The reduction gear assemblies that convert high-speed motor rotation into the high torque and lower RPM delivered to the drill string, including planetary and parallel-shaft designs sized to the drive's torque rating.
Integrated Pipe Handlers
The rotating link tilt, torque wrench, and elevator subsystem that grips, makes up, and breaks out tubulars under the top drive, enabling stand handling without a separate iron roughneck.
Internal Blowout Preventer Valves (IBOP)
The upper and lower kelly-type safety valves built into the top drive main shaft that allow the drill string to be shut in from above for well control.
