Direct-Acting (Self-Operated) Regulators
Regulators in which the controlled fluid acts directly on a diaphragm or piston opposed by an adjustment spring, with no external power or pilot. Simple and reliable for low-to-moderate flows where some droop in setpoint as flow changes is acceptable.
Pilot-Operated Regulators
Two-stage regulators where a small pilot senses outlet pressure and supplies a loading pressure that positions the main valve, giving tighter setpoint control and higher capacity. Preferred for high-flow gas reduction and applications needing accuracy across a wide load range.
Pressure-Reducing Regulators
Regulators that reduce a variable high inlet pressure to a stable lower outlet pressure, sensing downstream pressure to throttle the valve closed as the setpoint is reached. Used for fuel gas, instrument supply, and stepping down wellhead or gathering pressure.
Backpressure Regulators
Regulators that sense upstream (inlet) pressure and open to relieve flow when that pressure exceeds the setpoint, holding a constant pressure on a vessel, separator, or line. Used to maintain separator and gathering-line backpressure and to bypass excess flow.
Gas Pressure Regulators
Regulators specifically built for natural gas, fuel gas, and CNG service, with seat materials and venting suited to gas and often an internal or external sense line. Includes wellsite fuel-gas, burner, and CNG station service regulators.
High-Pressure Regulators
Heavy-duty regulators rated for elevated inlet pressures from wellheads, high-pressure gas headers, and nitrogen or gas-injection systems. Built with reinforced bodies, hardened trim, and higher pressure-class end connections.
Differential Pressure Regulators
Regulators that maintain a fixed pressure difference between two reference points rather than a single absolute outlet pressure, sensing both sides across the diaphragm. Used to control flow across orifices, chemical-injection rates, and balanced process streams.
Axial-Flow Regulators
Inline regulators in which flow passes straight through an axial, piston-balanced trim, giving high capacity, low noise, and fast response for large-volume gas pressure control. Common on transmission and large gathering systems.
