SSAB Alabama Inc. is the Alabama-based subsidiary of SSAB AB, a Swedish global leader in special and premium steels. The SSAB Alabama facility in Axis, Alabama operates an electric arc furnace (EAF) steel production plant using 99% recycled scrap metal as raw material, producing heavy steel plate and coil for the North American market. SSAB Americas is the largest heavy plate producer in North America with approximately 30% market share and 1.8 million tonnes of steel shipped annually. The company serves the energy, heavy transport, construction, infrastructure, and heavy equipment sectors. SSAB holds API certifications including 2H for carbon manganese steel plate for offshore applications and 2W for steel plates by thermo-mechanically controlled processing (TMCP), making their products critical for offshore platform construction, pipeline infrastructure, and pressure vessel fabrication. The company employs approximately 700 people across its Americas operations and is ranked No. 1 in quality by the independent Jacobson Report. In 2025, SSAB announced a $74 million investment to expand quenched and tempered (Q&T) steel production capacity at the Alabama facility.
